CO-OWNING A TELLTALE DOG

What is a breeding prospect?

A breeding prospect is a young dog that has not matured enough to be fully evaluated for breeding. I may choose to release the dog from breeding at any time.

What does co-ownership mean?

I remain listed as a secondary owner on the dogs papers until the dog is spayed/neutered or an  agreement is made to sign off in the future.

Why co-own?

Having co-owned breeding dogs allows me to keep my personal dog numbers low so I can continue raising my dogs in my home. It allows me more time to train, trial, raise litters, and live life with my breeding dogs. Co-owns are invaluable to my program and give me great information on my dogs from an outsider perspective.

Are co-own puppies free or discounted?

No, co-own puppies are sold at full price. If/when a co own dog is used for breeding their owner will receive monetary compensation or a puppy back at no cost. Co-owned puppies receive free/discounted boarding and grooming.

Do I have to be local?

No, especially not for a male dog. For females a local co-own is preferred but not required.

What does co-owning a dog entail ?

  1. Keeping the dog intact: For males this includes not allowing them to roam free, preventing unwanted litters, and training to make sure they can act like good citizens around females. For females this includes dealing with heat cycles, preventing unwanted pregnancies, and providing a safe environment while they are in heat.

  2. Health Testing: This includes OFA hip & elbow exams, OFA eye exams, genetic health testing, and other tests that may be deemed necessary prior to breeding. Telltale puppy owners agree to screen their dogs for hip & elbow dysplasia regardless of co-own status. All other breeding related health testing is the financial responsibility of the breeder.

  3. Males: Allowing me access to them for live cover or fresh chilled breedings. Allowing me access to collect and freeze semen and store in my name for future use. Option for a puppy back or monetary compensation.

  4. Females: Allow them to return to Telltale for 1-2 litters. All fees associated with breeding are the responsibility of the breeder. Option for a puppy back or monetary compensation.

  5. Titling: Performance homes are preferred for co-own opportunities. Active pet homes in New England will be considered on a case by case basis.
